A 30-year-old Indian transsexual who married a man almost 40 years older than her has made legal history by being granted compensation in a divorce settlement. The woman described in The Times of India as Anjali who "converted himself from a boy to a girl" was granted 71,000 rupees (just more than £1,000) in a Porbander court, around 250 miles north-west of Bombay. She married 72-year-old Durgashanker Shivshanker Bhatt, from London and, following their honeymoon, spent the next year waiting for immigration paperwork but this did not materialise. The newspaper said: "Angered over ditching, the male anger blew hot and cold. She decided to drag the old man to the court." The ensuing settlement is the first case of divorce compensation being granted to a person who has undergone a sex change. |
